Last weekend my sisters and I decided to take
advantage of the dreary weather by having a movie marathon!
Well, okay, we were planning on having a movie marathon
anyway haha but the rain made it that much cooler :)
It was sooo cozy.
I wore PJs all day and nobody could make fun of me!
Dad did his part by making sure the room
was full of snacks at all times, so he scored some brownie points
(speaking of brownies, I made two batches of brownies
this weekend and did not eat one! Yay for lent!).
There is a slight chance that we may have pigged out a little...
(how many chicken wings did you eat, Melissa?!)
So anyway, I was able to accomplish goal
#059: Spend the day watching
old Hollywood movies
Michelle and I brainstormed earlier that week
exactly which movies we wanted to watch. Our final list included:
Casablanca, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Lawrence of Arabia,
Shall We Dance, Love in the Afternoon, Some Like it Hot,
7 Year Itch, His Girl Friday, and My Fair Lady.
We were very ambitious and obviously, time did
not permit us to watch all of these. Some of these movies
were unavailable at any of the video stores in the area so we
had to make a few compromises, but here is what we ended up watching:
♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
MOVIE #1
By far, my favorite movie of the day. It was so modern and so funny!
It was actually a lot like the movie White Chicks starring the Waynes Brothers.
One thing I have to comment on is Marilyn Monroe's body.
Holy moly. Have you ever watched a movie with her in it?
She is not a skinny girl. She's curvy... Like, if she were on
ANTM, they would make her be a plus size model.
If I had to compare her body to that of a celebrity of today,
I would say, without hesitation, Beyoncé Knowles.
Actually, know that I really look at it,
I think Beyoncé is skinner than Marilyn was.
It was so weird to see a full-figured woman
be sought after by the men in the movie -- that doesn't happen today.
All the famous hollywood starlets today are skinny-minnies.
It is crazy to think about how much
society's idea of beauty has changed.
I wonder if it will ever revert back to the former?

MOVIE #2
I read Truman Capote's Breakfast at Tiffany's
a year or two ago. It is kind of a weird story.
The movie had an entirely different ending from the
book, but I think I liked to book more.
Audrey was cute. It was a stark contrast from
Marilyn, though; Audrey must have been about 1/3 of Marilyn's size.
I couldn't take my eyes away from her thick lashes
and winged eyeliner, though! Very beautiful.
MOVIE #3
Okay, okay, this might not be a "classic hollywood movie"
but Michelle & I could not resist when we passed it in the video store!
I have always wanted to see it and Michelle highly recommended it.
Woody Allen movies are a genre unto themselves.
They are so unique and interesting. This was my second favorite movie
of the day. Diane Keaton was so adorable
and I loved watching all of the awkward banter and
the strange film techniques Allen used.

MOVIE #4
How could we not watch Casablanca?
It is THE romance that started them all.
Watching it was surreal because there were so many
lines and plot points that have become so engrained in
our culture that we don't even realize they had to come from somewhere.
Here are some iconic lines that made me shiver during the movie:
- Here's looking at you, kid.
- I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
- I ran away from you once. I can't do it again.
- I wish I didn't love you so much.
- Round up the usual suspects
- Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine.
- We'll always have Paris.
Sighhh... ♥

MOVIE #5
We were barely awake by this time
but we could not stop at four!
This movie was recommended to us by another
customer at the video store. I mainly wanted to watch
it because I have a fat crush on Cary Grant.
James Stewart had a bigger role in this movie, though
(my sisters both loved him).
I recommend His Girl Friday if you
want to see Cary Grant shine.
This movie was funny though, and pretty entertaining.

That was the end of our movie marathon!
I wish we got started earlier or had more time to
continue it, because I really wanted to watch
An Affair to Remember. And I wanted to watch
another Audrey Hepburn movie since Breakfast
at TIffany's was kind of slow. I also want to watch more
Marilyn Monroe movies because she is so dang cute.
Marathons are fun.
You should have one.
I think my next one will be "foreign language".
